   ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

Tray Back Wagon

There are nine components in the white metal tray-back wagon kit.

Exploded view of components.

 They are:
 1    the wagon tray,
 2    the front axle box,

 3    the rear axle box,
 4    four wheels,
5    the front axle box mounting plate, and
 6    the shafts.

While all items have been quality checked before leaving the foundry there will always be some minor flash on some components.  I endeavour to produce castings that are flash-free, however it is sometimes unavoidable.  You should therefore check each component for flash, removing any with a pair of sharp side cutters.  Mould marks or parting lines can be removed with fine wet and dry emery paper.  Be careful not to scratch or mark delicate areas on models, like the face of a figure.

Wheels especially, will have a parting line around the rim.  This is easily removed with use of an fine abrasive paper.  Any flash between the spokes on a wheel can be removed with a fine miniature file.

PREPARATION
Moulds are coated with a fine talc before casting, to aid the flow of the metal.  Castings should therefore be washed in warm soapy water, then rinsed and dried, before assembling the model or applying paint.

ASSEMBLY
Identify the two axle boxes.  Drill a hole the same size as the stub axle of the wheels, into each end of both axle boxes.  It needs to be only about 3 to 4 mm deep.  Next, cut each stub axle on each wheel to length, so that the wheel fits snugly in the hole.  When you are happy with the fit - glue the wheel to the axle box and put it aside to dry.  I recommend using a 'superglue' or to assemble the model.

An alternate method is to attach the axle boxes to the wagon frame, after the holes for the wheel stub axles have been drilled, but before attaching the wheels.  This works just as well. See this and the next photo for placement of completed axle box/wheel sub-assemblies.

In order to attach the shafts to the front axle assembly, drill a small hole into the sides of the shaft mounting plate and also through the ends of the front axel plate.  This will allow a 6 to 8 mm length of brass pin (a dress-maker's pin) to be inserted through the front axel plate and glued into the shaft plate, which will act as a hinge and allow the shafts to be moved freely.  Note that as the model is not intended to be a working model the wheels will not rotate ('cause you just glued 'em in place of course).

PAINTING
I recommend you give the finished wagon a coat of automotive etch primer, before applying top coats in the colours of your choice.  After the model is thoroughly dry, like three to four days drying time, I like to give them a final light coat of a matt medium or clear matt finish.
